Chester, PA –
Philadelphia Union today unveiled the signing of English forward Jay Simpson. A product of the esteemed Arsenal youth academy, Simpson joins the Club having most recently featured for English Football League Two outfit, Leyton Orient.
Simpson, 28, made 45 league appearances for The O’s last season netting an impressive 25 goals. The Englishman’s track record, paired with his eye for the goal, most impressed Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart.
“He [Simpson] has played at the highest levels of club soccer, including in the Premier League, and we are excited to add a forward of his quality to our squad,”said Stewart in a news release.
The well-traveled forward adds much needed depth to the attack. Simpson will join C.J. Sapong and Charlie Davies at the top, and he will occupy one of Union’s remaining international roster spots upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
This is Union’s second signing in the January transfer window, and the Club’s second in four days.
